Gerrard: Liverpool showed they could cope with title race pressure

Steven Gerrard takes a question during a pregame press conference

Despite falling short in the title race last season, Gerrard believes they showed they can cope with the pressure of the title race, and that they can challenge again.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has said the side can handle the pressure of being in the title race despite finishing second when they were odds-on to end their 24-year wait to become champions last term.

The Reds went on an 11-game winning run last season to put themselves in a good position with three games remaining, but a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea at home, followed by the Reds surrendering a three goal lead at Crystal Palace meant their challenge unravelled.

But Gerrard said that many thought Liverpool's challenge would fall away a lot earlier.

He's quoted in the Liverpool Echo, saying: “I think we showed we could cope with pressure. With 10, 12 games to go, people were maybe expecting us to drop away a lot sooner than we did.

“But we handled the pressure superbly well and we played some unbelievable football. We are a good team, with a good manager, that is getting stronger."

Liverpool did enjoy an excellent second half to last season, and some would say their first half of the campaign cost them more than the second half as the Reds only lost the one game in 2014, dropping a total of nine points in the second half of the campaign.

But the timing of when they dropped those points, so close to the finishing line when they had all this momentum with them will lead to many labelling the Reds from last season as 'bottlers', which will be something Gerrard is determined to put behind both him and the team as a whole.

He added that he believes Liverpool can be genuine challengers again in the upcoming season, saying:

“The league is going to be very tough but we know we are one of the sides that has got a genuine chance of winning it. I believe that.

“The reason I have that belief and confidence is because of the experience of all the other games last year, and also the manager has been here for a bit longer, and because of the signings he is making. I’m pretty confident we can get right involved in it again.”

Despite the loss of Luis Suarez, there still seems to be an element of belief around Liverpool that they can go on to bigger and better things.
