Liverpool boss Rodgers in dig at Tottenham: "There's a strategy behind what we're doing"

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has taken a sly dig at Premier League rivals Tottenham over transfer policy.

Liverpool's transfer activity was severely affected by the shock departure of star striker Luis Suarez. The Uruguayan moved to Barcelona in a £75m deal earlier this month, leaving manager Rodgers with a huge hole to fill in his attack - and so far, he's filled it with a number of players.

Benfica winger Lazar Markovic and Southampton duo Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert have joined the club for over £50m, but the signing of multiple players to replace one star has drawn comparisons to Tottenham's transfer business last summer.

Spurs lost Gareth Bale to Real Madrid in a world record £86m deal a year ago, and proceeded to spend massively on wingers Nacer Chadli and Erik Lamela, playmaker Christian Eriksen and striker Roberto Soldado, spending over £60m on the quartet - yet only Eriksen could really be classed as a success after his first season.

Some are now worried that the Reds are heading down a similar road, but Rodgers was particularly spiky on the issue, even going as far to say that things are different at Anfield - because there is actually a plan in place with Liverpool, suggesting that there wasn't at White Hart Lane.

"It's a different club and different vision we have here. At Liverpool there's a strategy behind what we are doing," Rodgers said. "We talked a lot with our recruitment team last season, knowing that through the summer we needed to improve the depth of our squad.

"Clearly we were not strong enough last season in terms of numbers and quality. We always planned to bring in a number of players, hoping we were going to be in the Champions League, so it would give us the opportunity to challenge on all fronts. The new players know their roles and we hope they can develop in the future as well. So far, the integration has been smooth."

Will Liverpool's spending lead to more success than Spurs had last season?
