Manchester United transfer news: Boss wants defenders; alleged £20m Chelsea bid for reported target

Louis Van Gaal

A select round-up of the latest news relating to Manchester United

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has admitted that he is looking to sign new defenders this summer.

United have recently lost Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Alex Buttner and Patrice Evra, and the Independent has linked the regular names with a possible switch to Old Trafford.

Daley Blind, Mats Hummels and Thomas Vermaelen are all in the gossip columns once more, after van Gaal was quoted as saying the following:

“We are doing well but we are looking for defenders. Defenders have one and we have to replace them.”

Speaking of defenders, Atletico Madrid centre-back Miranda has long been linked with United, but it is Chelsea who could now bring him to England.

The Express has picked up on reports from Spain which claim the Blues have lodged a £20million bid for the Brazilian, despite his release-clause being a reported £24million.

It would be no surprise if Chelsea did move for another central defender following the departure of David Luiz, even with the return from loan of the young but extremely talented Kurt Zouma.

But United will know Miranda’s release-clause, so if no move has yet arrived, one suspects van Gaal has alternative targets in mind.

Who would you like to see as United's centre-back pairing next season?
