In the latest Everton transfer news, Romelu Lukaku has joined the club in a £28 million deal.

"Everton have made a statement."

Those are the words of Toffees manager Roberto Martinez who ecstatically announced the acquisition of former Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku on a £28 million deal earlier this evening, Wednesday, on a five-year basis.

The Belgian striker, just 21-years-old, scored 15 goals and six assists from 29 Premier League starts last season - an attacking efficiency of a goal scored or assist provided once every 123 minutes he was on the field.

For the past two seasons combined he is third only to Robin van Persie and Luis Suarez as the division's top scorer and he finds the net, on average, once for every 6.5 times he attempts a shot.

Lukaku was deemed surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge following the summer arrivals of Diego Costa and the Didier Drogba, however, signing the player permanently is "news every Evertonian wanted to hear," Martinez said.

The player was handed the number 10 shirt and will therefore follow in the footsteps of Barry Horne, Gary Speed, Don Hutchison, Duncan Ferguson, Thomas Graveson and Mikel Arteta.

Lukaku said: “I am really excited about rejoining Everton. I had a fantastic experience last season and a great relationship with the manager, the chairman, the staff, the players and the fans. I can’t wait to get started again and I’m looking forward to a successful season.”
