Arsenal have been busy during the summer transfer window, and they recently followed up the signings of Alexis Sanchez, Mathieu Debuchy and David Ospina with the arrival of Calum Chambers from Southampton.
For a reported fee rising to £16million, the Gunners have signed one of the most exciting young English players in the game. And in the latest in our series on the numbers behind a player’s career to date, we take a closer look at Arsenal’s new arrival.
3 – The number of positions Chambers can play in if required. While predominantly a right-back he is also an effective central defender who can also operate in a defensive midfield role. That flexibility could be exactly the reason Arsenal have spent big on him.
25 – The number of senior club appearances in Chambers’ career to date. It is telling that despite playing so few matches for Southampton, he has generated such a substantial transfer fee. In time, if he continues his current trajectory, he will prove to be a bargain.
0 – The number of times the defender has been sent off in his senior career. Coupled with the fact that he has only been booked once in that time, it is clear Arsene Wenger has signed a player with an impressive temperament.
6 – The number of goals he was directly involved in during his time with Southampton’s under-21s. He scored three and set up three in 25 under-21 appearances, suggesting he could become a goal-threat for the Gunners in time.
23 – The number of times the player has represented England at either under-17 or under-19 level. Chambers has also scored five goals in that time.
Verdict – Arsenal may ultimately pay a substantial fee for Chambers but it will be money extremely well spent. Southampton have produced some excellent talent in recent times and the young defender is one of the very best.
As cover for a number of Arsenal regulars, Chambers should get plenty of minutes next season. But in the long-term it will be interesting to see which position he makes his home as he could excel in a number of them.
