CONFIRMED: Tottenham agree deal to sign Eric Dier from Sporting Lisbon

White Hart Lane 5

Tottenham have tonight announced that they have agreed a deal with Sporting Lisbon to sign defender Eric Dier.

Spurs have wrapped up their third signing of the summer with the pending arrival of England Under-21 international Dier. The club sent out this tweet earlier tonight announcing that the 20-year-old was poised to sign for the club having reached an agreement with his club Sporting Lisbon.

Dier was born in Cheltenham, but moved over to Portugal aged just 10. It was there where he was spotted by Sporting, and he was signed up for their academy team. Since then, there has been confusion over whether Dier would choose to play for Portugal or England, but his consistent representation of the English youth sides suggests that his allegiance lies with his country of birth.

A centre back or defensive midfielder, Dier is big, strong and athletic, and has his best football ahead of him - becoming the second young British player to join Spurs this summer after Swansea left back Ben Davies.

A move to England will no doubt do his chances of earning a place in the England first team the world of good, and working under new Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino should be a boost given the Argentine's work with youngsters such as Luke Shaw and Calum Chambers at Southampton last season.

Dier is unlikely to make an instant impact this season, but his signing shows a clear vision for the future, and landing him before other Premier League clubs could get involved is a great sign for Spurs fans. A versatile player with a great future ahead of him, Dier should be a big player for Tottenham for years to come.
