Vidic backs Man United's central defenders to step up

Nemanja Vidic

Vidic thinks Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans and Phil Jones have got what it takes to be effective for Manchester United at the back this season.

Former Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic has backed some of the club's defenders to be amongst the best of the league in the near future.

Vidic's departure, along with that of Rio Ferdinand, has left a huge void in the United defence but the Serbian believes that Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans can make up for their departure and step up under new manager Louis van Gaal, and become first team regulars.

He's quoted in the Manchester Evening News, saying: "Of course I think they are good enough to do it.

"I was sure of that even when I played with them. I said then they have really good potential, physically and technically.

"They are really good and they are young.

"They are getting better and better every year.

"In the next two years they will be I think some of the best defenders in the league. I think they will prove that this season and I wish them all the best."

Van Gaal is reportedly in the market for more defenders this summer as he looks to bolster his side ahead of his first season in charge at Old Trafford, and at times last season the United defence didn't cover itself in glory.

However, if the trio of Evans, Smalling and Jones are given enough game time together, some would argue that could form an effective combination at the back.

The question is whether any of the targets that are being mooted for Manchester United are better than the present players. Thomas Vermalen has been strongly linked with a move from Arsenal to Old Trafford. Borussia Dortmund's Mats Hummels would be a quality addition to the side - though Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp seems to have laughed off any suggestion of the German international leaving his side.

This summer United have lost two defenders who had a great ability to lead their side, whilst some would argue the trio still at the club don't have those sorts of qualities. But this season would certainly be an opportunity to show if they do have those leadership qualities in them.
