Manchester City player ratings v Liverpool - Jovetic brilliant, wonderkid impresses

Manchester City Etihad 2

Manchester City fell to Liverpool in a penalty shootout in New York on Wednesday evening, but turned in a bright performance highlighted by another Stevan Jovetic brace.

Willy Caballero 6/10 - Only called into action once, positioning himself well to block Rickie Lambert’s early header at close range.

Gael Clichy 6.5/10 - Gave a good account of himself playing at right-back. Defensively sound and got forward to support Navas with frequency.

Dedryck Boyata 6.5/10 - Composed and kept Sturridge quiet for much of the day. Didn’t look out of his depth against a fierce group of attackers by any stretch.

Matija Nastasic 7/10 - Alert to danger both by air and on the ground. Made some crucial clearances and wasn’t afraid to take on attackers one-on-one.

Aleksandar Kolarov 7/10 - Fired in an arsenal of low crosses from the left flank and was constantly made overlapping runs. Full blooded in the challenge at the other end of the park.

Fernando 6.5/10 - Swept things up nicely in midfield, particularly in the first half. Rendered less effective as Liverpool played with greater width after the break.

Jesus Navas 7.5/10 - Gave both Jose Enrique and Jack Robinson fits, drawing plenty of gasps from the capacity crowd with some brilliant pieces of skill. Essentially created Stevan Jovetic’s opener and turned in a top drawer display.

Bruno Zuculini 6.5/10 - Always made himself available in the centre of the park, but at times his touch let him down. Agonisingly fired a shot onto the crossbar from only four yards out with an open goal.

James Milner 6.5/10 - Industrious per usual. Played a few great diagonal balls for Navas to run on to on the opposite flank before coming off at the break.

Stevan Jovetic 8/10 - Another superb showing from the Montenegrin, who is really coming into his own during City’s USA tour. Struck a poacher’s brace with deadly instinct, and now leads the ICC in goals through two games with four.

Edin Dzeko 6.5/10 - Combined well with Jovetic, showing his creative side at several junctures in 45 minutes of work on the night.

Substitutes

Joe Hart (46’ for Caballero) 6.5/10 - Came on at half time and made a trio of excellent stops. Could do little about either of Liverpools goals, with clinical finishing from Jordan Henderson Raheem Sterling.

Kelechi Iheanacho (46’ for Dzeko) 7/10 - A bright spot after coming on. The 17-year-old glided past defenders with grace on the ball and looked to relish the occasion. Was the only City player to score in the penalty shootout.

Scott Sinclair (46’ for Milner) 6/10 - Wasn’t terribly involved, but snuck in behind Glen Johnson when the opportunity presented itself.

Yaya Toure (70’ for Jovetic) 6/10 -Didn’t have a great impact on the game after coming on. Saw his rather poor penalty saved by Simon Mignolet.

Micah Richards (70’ for Clichy) 6.5/10 - Turned in a solid 20 minutes on the evening. Bombed forward a few times and tracked back in equal measure.
