Napoli chief confirms interest in Manchester United flop

Marouane Fellaini Belgium

The £27.5 million midfielder may be offloaded from Louis van Gaal's United squad.

Outspoken Napoli owner Aurelio De Laurentiis has confirmed that Manchester United's Belgian midfielder Marouane Fellaini is a target for the Naples club.

The former Everton star was the big name transfer of David Moyes' only summer in charge at Old Trafford, but spectacularly failed to settle at the club due to poor form, niggling injuries and uncertainty over his strongest position, leaving him playing just 21 times and failing to score.

It has meant that Fellaini is one of the vulnerable members of the United squad now Dutchman Louis van Gaal is in charge, with the club reportedly looking to recoup as much of the £27.5 million they spent on him as possible.

And De Laurentiis has confirmed that he and manager Rafa Benitez are pursuing the 26-year-old, ahead of another season in the Champions League.

"Fellaini is one of the names that we are considering to strengthen our midfield," said the film producer. "But it is not the only one.

"His hair could be in line with the Neapolitan style!"

De Laurentiis also stated that the club are looking to offload Valon Behrami to Hamburg to make way in the squad for the giant Belgian, or any other midfielder they bring in.

"There was no space for the player in the Rafa Benitez's game and so we decided to satisfy his demands (to go away).

"Valon has always given so much to Napoli and it is right he'll continue his career as a protagonist."

Should United give Fellaini one more season?
