Arsenal linked with unlikely bid for former Liverpool and current Real Madrid star

Arbeloa

Real Madrid right-back Alvaro Arbeloa has emerged as a shock target for Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger.

Contrary to years gone by, Arsenal have been active in the transfer market before the Premier League campaign has kicked off.

Four big signings have come in, including Chilean international Alexis Sanchez, whereas over ten players have departed the Emirates with Bacary Sagna being the most controversial.

With just over two weeks left until Arsenal face Crystal Palace on the opening day of the season, boss Arsene Wenger is reportedly keen to add another name to his squad.

According to the Spanish newspaper AS, that player comes from the Spanish capital but in the surprise form of Real Madrid right-back Alvaro Arbeloa.

In Mathieu Debuchy and Calum Chambers, the Gunners have successfully replaced the departed Sagna yet it appears Wenger is still wanting to add yet more strength in depth at the back.

The report states that Wenger feels new signing Chambers could be more suited to a central role in the near future, and the possible loss of Thomas Vermaelen to Manchester United would subsequently see the need to add yet more cover at the back.

31-year-old Arbeloa isn’t short of Premier League experience, having represented Liverpool 66 times over a three-year period under former Spanish coach Rafa Benitez.

Whilst predominantly a right-back, the Spanish international is comfortable at left-back and his first full start for Liverpool was played in this position – up against Lionel Messi at the Camp Nou in a match won by the Reds.

Following the rise of current Real Madrid right-back Daniel Carvajal, Arbeloa has been left on the side-lines by coach Carlo Ancelotti and he was recently heavily linked with re-uniting with Benitez at Napoli.

Despite such a deal reportedly falling through, his five-year stint in the Spanish capital appears to be drawing to a close and a possible new start in North London awaits.

Would Alvaro Arbeloa be a good signing for Arsenal?
