A look at how Tottenham fans have reacted to the imminent signing of Eric Dier, with instant comparisons to Arsenal's new addition.
Tottenham Hotspur are closing on the imminent signing of Eric Dier, their second defensive addition in a fortnight.
Dier follows the acquisition of Ben Davies, with his transfer announced on Tottenham's website.
"We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement with Sporting Lisbon for the transfer of Eric Dier, subject to the player passing a medical."
Dier is highly rated, and once spent a short loan spell with Everton. The 20-year-old broke into the Sporting Lisbon first team last season, becoming a regular as they finished second in the Primeira Liga.
An England under-21 star, Dier can play in various positions across the backline - and is rumoured to cost as little as £4 million.
It's an impressively cheap price for a promising Englishman in this market, highlighted by rivals Arsenal committing to paying up to £16 million for Southampton's Calum Chambers.
Given Dier's potential and manager Mauricio Pochettino's track record of working with young players, there is plenty for Spurs fans to be excited about, with real hope the youngster can make an immediate impact this coming season.
Here is a look at how Tottenham fans reacted on Twitter to the news of his signing breaking:
Eric Dier, seen him play often last season in Portugal, looks very solid, have plenty to improve on, good shrewd buy from Pochettino #COYS— Ben Boorman (@benboorman21) July 31, 2014
Under the stewardship of Maurico Pochettino, I'm sure Eric Dier will reach his full potential and soon break into the first team. #COYS— (@SpursInTheBlood) July 31, 2014
Both Dier and Chambers can play RB, CB and CM/CDM. Just a £12 million difference.— #Spursy (@UpTheSpurss) July 31, 2014
Happy with the Dier signing! Technically very good an will fit right in to Poch style! Will be involved in 1st team squad this season #thfc— Chris Osborne (@C_Ozzy11) August 1, 2014
We are supposed to get CB's in, not out! Dier is a replacement long term but not for now. The Verts to Barca-rumors ruin my vacation...#thfc— Leakim Morts (@leakimmorts) August 1, 2014
Will Eric Dier prove a better signing than Calum Chambers?
