This transfer window certainly has not lacked surprises, and Chelsea have been at the centre of them.
Cesc Fabregas signing for them was the big one, and was recently followed up by Didier Drogba's return.
Now there is movement which threatens to wipe that smile off the faces of supporters, with the club's record scorer Frank Lampard heading for Manchester City on loan.
Manager Jose Mourinho released Lampard in June, and last month he signed with MLS side New York City FC, who happen to be owned by Manchester City's owners.
It's logical on their part they would want to loan Lampard out to the Premier League champions for the first half of the season, giving the Englishman a chance to play against Chelsea. The two sides face off on September 21 at The Etihad.
The BBC report that Lampard is expected to finalise the loan move, which will run until mid-January. They add the midfielder could head to Manchester as soon as next week.
Lampard, if as expected is registered for the Champions League, will also help City meet their English player quota for the competition.
There lies ahead a fascinating finale for the 36-year-old before he begins his adventure in the States, but it won' be easy for Chelsea fans to take.
Watching him in a City shirt, going up against Fabregas in a Chelsea shirt, just seems almost incomprehensible.
Here is a look at how Chelsea fans reacted on Twitter to the news:
lampard is a legend and always but can't say I'm not gonna be gutted to see him in a city shirt #cfc— ross (@rossodonoghue_8) August 1, 2014
Lampard could've came back to #CFC and train with them. Hope he still does this than play for City.— Louis (@Cesc_is_blue) August 1, 2014
Frank Lampard will always be a Chelsea legend but what is he thinking? #CFC— Robbie Holness (@HolnessRobbie) August 1, 2014
Lampard to City sucks but obviously it doesn't change anything as far as #CFC fans are concerned. Legend.— Divyam Arora (@divyamaro) August 1, 2014
It's soon to be official, but I wish Frank Lampard best of luck at Manchester City! #CFC— TheChelseaViews (@TheChelseaViews) August 1, 2014
If lampard goes city, I'll disown him
