Simeone’s World Cup XI features 10 German/Argentine players; Who is the other?

Gary Medel Chile

The Atletico Madrid boss has stayed loyal to his native Argentina, but not overlooked winners Germany.

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has picked his best eleven from this summer’s World Cup in Brazil.

The 44-year-old has stayed loyal to his Argentina countryman, with four players from the runners-up featuring, whilst six of Germany’s squad also made the cut.

Simeone was giving his World Cup XI as part of his role as a Sony coaching ambassador, but which non-Argentine/German player made his team?

It was none other than Chile’s Gary Medel. The Cardiff City player performed heroics in the tournament for his country, and emulated Paul Gascoigne’s tears of 1990 following their penalty shoot-out exit to Brazil.

Medel usually features in a holding midfield role, but was asked to form part of a three-man defence for Chile this summer, something that impressed Simeone.

“Even though he played in a three-man defence and despite the fact he’s not the tallest for a defender, Medel adapted really well in his role at the back," He is reported as saying at WalesOnline.

“He played with a lot of leadership, great intensity and commitment. He really impressed me and what he did in Chile’s last match against Brazil was sensational.

“To play as he did in a team set up to go forward and to press was excellent. He had a great World Cup.”

The other defenders that featured in Simeone’s team were Philipp Lahm, Mats Hummels and Marcus Rojo, while Thomas Muller, Javier Mascherano, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Angel Di Maria formed the midfield. Lionel Messi and Miroslav Klose completed the Argentinian’s team as the two strikers.

Despite being impressed with the likes of Medel this summer, it doesn’t seem as if Simeone will swoop for any of the player’s in his World Cup eleven.

Atletico have signed Antoine Griezmann and Mario Mandžukić as replacements for Diego Costa, as they now face the tough task of trying to defend their La Liga title against much improved Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Medel himself is currently in a transfer tug of war between Inter Milan and Galatasaray, with the Chilean looking likely to leave Cardiff in the coming weeks.
