On the 1st August 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Manchester United, Liverpool and QPR.

Let's cast our eyes back to this exact day, the 1st August 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 1st August 2013…

Tie down Taider

With midfield deals for Thiago Alcantara, Cesc Fabregas and Ander Herrera all apparently on the agenda - it came as something of a shock to hear that Manchester United were interested in a little known Algerian a year ago today.

Saphir Taider was coming off the back of a strong campaign in Italy with Bologna and his agent spoke of interest in his services.

George Atangana stated:

"He deserves more money and I would not be doing my job properly if I did not ask Bologna to improve his agreement and if a club like Manchester United is interested then you have to give him what he deserves if you want him to stay. At the moment, Saphir is not happy."

In the end he joined Inter Milan, but had a poor season with the Nerazzuri, and is all set to move to Southampton this summer.

Costly Costa

A year ago today and Liverpool made a bid of £22 million for Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa - triggering the player's then release clause.

Costa was not a well-known name back then, and Liverpool were gambling slightly on his potential transfer. But he stayed with Atletico - signing a new deal with a £32 million buy-out condition.

He went on to have a fantastic campaign with Los Colchoneros - scoring goals for fun as they won La Liga and made the Champions League final.

But next season he will face Liverpool - after joining Chelsea this month.

Aust-In

A year ago today and QPR signed the man they hope will fire them to Premier League safety next term. Charlie Austin arrived at the club from Burnley for a fee in the region of £4 million and went on to score 20 goals in 26 appearances for Harry Redknapp's side - as they earned promotion to the top flight via the play-offs.
