Prospect with €45m release clause boasts of comparison to Liverpool star

Mamadou Sakho

Sporting Lisbon signing Nabil Sarr has compared himself to Mamadou Sakho.

Mamadou Sakho has a new threat for his Liverpool place in Dejan Lovren, but worldwide his reputation is growing.

The French World Cup star played a crucial role in getting Les Bleus to Brazil, scoring important goals in the play-offs, and is now being used as a yardstick for young prospects to measure themselves against.

New Sporting Lisbon signing Nabil Sarr was unveiled by the club today, and was boastful of comparisons he has had to the Liverpool defender.

Sarr (bottom) was bought from Lyon for £570,000 - but Sporting are keen to protect their investment in the 20-year-old, tying him down until 2020 and placing a huge €45 million release clause into his contract.

He told O Jogo: "I think I have a good head game and I am very comfortable to make wide passes are also my main attribute is.. I a correct player, I intend to never hurt any opponent out of malice."

"Usually they say I have a style of play much like the Mamadou Sakho and think they are not wrong."

Sakho himself is one year into his Liverpool career, but made only 19 Premier League appearances. He will be hoping to increase on this and solidify a place in the side. Is he ready for the level of admiration and to be a measurement of success, or does he still have a lot to prove himself on Merseyside?

With competition from Lovren, Agger, Toure, Skrtel and Coates, it will not be easy for the former PSG captain.

Competition for places at Liverpool is a real positive, especially with Champions League football to play this season, but if Sakho is to really become the player who youngsters like Sarr aspire to emulate - he needs to build upon his potential and deliver, to become an automatic starter.

Whether manager Brendan Rodgers decides to back Sakho by biting the bullet and selling either Skrtel or Agger remains to be seen, but it is one viable option open to him, and if he does not, it may indicate he still has doubts as to whether the Frenchman is yet ready.

Do you believe Sakho should be a first choice starter for Liverpool? Is he a player youngsters should aspire to emulate?
