Would Fellaini fit in at Napoli?

Marouane Fellaini Belgium

Napoli are trying to lure Marouane Fellaini from Manchester United, but it's hard to see where the Belgian would fit in Rafa Benitez's system.

Napoli have done some impressive work in the transfer market, but their chase of Marouane Fellaini could be misguided.

The Partenopei pulled off the impressive feat of finishing third in Serie A last season and lifted the Coppa Italia, but they sometimes looked exposed at the back.

At the start of the summer, Napoli made no secret of their intention to sign a pugnacious defensive midfielder but they repeatedly met with a brick wall when trying to lure Lyon captain Maxime Gonalons.

Attempts to lure Barcelona's Javier Mascherano proved speculative and Tottenham's Sandro also seems to be off the radar.

The latest name to be mooted, Manchester United flop Fellaini, doesn't seem like an obvious fit for Napoli.

Benitez's 4-2-3-1 has been working, with the exception of the lack of an enforcer in front of the defence. Mascherano would have been ideal and could have made Napoli serious title contenders, Sandro might have worked, but Fellaini is an odd call.

Fellaini wouldn't be part of the attacking four with Gonzalo Higuain, Jose Callejon, Marek Hamsik and Lorenzo Insigne all but guaranteed starting spots, he would be joining to sit further back.

Fellaini would be required to play alongside either Jorginho or Gokhan Inler and would be in a role more similar to the one he failed to impress in at Manchester United than the position he occupied excellently for Everton.

Although the Belgian has physical presence, he could find himself out of his element looking sluggish in a fast-passing side and won't be the central target man figure that Everton needed.

The deal could be tough to pull of in any case with Fellaini's wages seemingly beyond Napoli and that could be a blessing in disguise for the Italians.
