Cristiano Ronaldo’s verdict on Manchester United’s season and Louis van Gaal

Cristiano Ronaldo

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo believes that Manchester United will achieve success under Louis van Gaal this season.

Manchester United’s 2014-15 campaign cannot be any worse than last season when they finished seventh in the Premier League.

After all, with Louis van Gaal in charge of the Red Devils, the only way is up for the three-time European champions.

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo is of a similar opinion, claiming that the Dutchman’s arrival at Old Trafford is going to bring back the glory days.

'It will be a better season for sure, my feeling is he is a fantastic coach', The Guardian quotes him as saying. 'He showed all the time for Holland, the team played unbelievable, good football.

'And I hope that Manchester come back like the people know – always so strong, playing nice football, with a lot of goals'.

Ronaldo played for six years for United between 2003 and 2009 under now retired manager Sir Alex Ferguson, and is one of the club’s all-time greats.

The 29-year-old Portugal international helped United win the Premier League title thrice, the FA Cup and the Champions League once each, and the League Cup twice during his time, while also claiming the Ballon d’Or award in 2008.

United fans will certainly agree with Ronaldo about the team improving under Van Gaal. The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach is one of the best in the world and certainly fits the profile of a United boss.

However, whether Van Gaal can guide United to Premier League success this season is debatable. The 2014-15 title race promises to be one of the most competitive in history, with Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool and perhaps even Tottenham Hotspur challenging for the honour.

As always, United will start the season as one of the contenders, but they may have to settle for a top-four finish in the world’s most popular domestic league.

Given what happened under David Moyes in 2013-14, a top-four finish in Van Gaal’s first season in charge of United should be considered a ‘success’.
