Three Championship transfers to complete by opening day, Leeds and Derby feature

Elland Road

Will Leeds United land Zan Benedicic? Is Leon Best destined for Derby County? And have Middlesbrough won the race for Patrick Bamford in time for opening day?

The Championship campaign kicks off in just less than a weeks time and with clubs looking to add their final pieces of the jigsaw to their squad, the next week of the transfer window promises to be an incredibly busy one.

We take a look at three big Championship transfers that could happen in time for opening day as managers come to the final stages of assessing what they need in order for promotion or consolidation.

1) Leeds United close to landing AC Milan midfielder, Zan Benedicic, on a season-long loan deal.

The Yorkshire side will inevitably be one of the busiest Championship clubs this week as their preparations for the new Championship season up until now have continued to be met by road blocks. Last week, for example, Leeds United reportedly had a deal that was all but signed with AS Roma star Federico Viviani but more recent noises indicate the deal is off and the player is due to look elsewhere. A nightmare scenario for the club with such little time left until they kick off the new season at Millwall.

Nevertheless, Leeds United still remain well-positioned to make improvements to their side this week with the Yorkshire Post reporting Zan Benedicic is 'on course' to complete his loan Leeds United in time for the start of the new season.

The report states: ''The AC Milan midfielder is closing in on a season-long move to England, with a deal set to be finalised early next week.

''Milan are willing to release Benedicic for the whole of the 2014-15 term and they and United have been discussing the option of including a clause in the deal which gives Leeds the right to sign the 18-year-old permanently next summer.''

It's unlikely that Benedicic will be the only new face through the Elland Road entrance door this week as Cellino looks to try and piece together a side capable of challenging at the right end of the division.

2) Derby County in talks with Blackburn Rovers over a deal for unlikely target Leon Best

Derby County fans could see their striker pursuit go in an unlikely direction after it was announced the club have been in talks with Blackburn Rovers over a deal for out-of-favour striker Leon Best.

The report on the BBC states: ''The 27-year-old Republic of Ireland international has not been given a squad number by Rovers and has been made available for transfer.

''And Best is understood to be keen on a move to the iPRO Stadium.''

Although the reaction from Derby fans has been largely negative, the former Newcastle star did net four goals in his last 10 games whilst at Sheffield Wednesday last season, so he does show signs that he could be a shrewd signing by the Rams

3) Middlesbrough look to have won the race for highly-rated striker Patrick Bamford.

Middlesbrough, who are fast becoming the dark horses for the Championship title, look to have won the race for highly-rated Chelsea striker Patrick Bamford ahead of the new season.

The 20-year-old, who spent time on loan at Derby County and MK Dons last season, could be joined by George Saville as Aitor Karanka looks to utilise his relationship with Jose Mourinho in order to mount a promotion push.

The report in the Mirror states: ''Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is ready to send striker Patrick Bamford and midfielder George Saville to pal Aitor Karanka at Middlesbrough.

''The pair are joining up with centre half Kenneth Omerou who is back at Middlesbrough as the bonds between the two clubs grow. The three should go straight into Karanka's side and will be the biggest Chelsea colony outside Stamford Bridge.''

Brentford, Wolverhampton Wanderers, QPR, Burnley and Derby County were all credited with interest in the striker.
