Tottenham Hotspur are said to be closing in on a deal for Villarreal defender Mateo Musacchio.
Villarreal defender Mateo Musacchio is reportedly in talks with Premier League outfit Tottenham Hotspur over a big-money move and has missed his club’s friendly match with Middlesbrough.
The £21million-rated defender was one of the main highlights during Villarreal’s debut season back in Spain’s top flight.
His performances drew lots of praise from La Liga observers and there were reports that Barcelona were looking at him as a possible back-up option to French international Jeremy Mathieu.
Despite the Catalans completing a deal for the former Valencia defender, Musacchio’s reputation has garnered interest elsewhere and if reports in England are true then he could be the subject of a big-money bid.
Reports out of Spain claimed that Spurs are in talks to sign the 23-year-old after new boss Mauricio Pochettino made him his summer priority as he looks to bolster his defensive ranks.
Rumours linking the Argentine star to White Hart Lane are increasing and his absence from Villarreal’s friendly match against Middlesbrough will only add yet more fuel to the speculation.
“While at a meeting it has been said physical discomfort is what prevents him from playing, the situation continues to encourage the chances of him leaving the club and closing a deal with Tottenham Hotspur”. Spanish newspaper AS reports.
The North Londoners have been quiet so far this summer with Swansea City duo Ben Davies and Michel Vorm plus Eric Dier pending a medical the only acquisitions.
Whilst there are two weeks left before the Premier League season commences and no need to panic, the clock is ticking towards August 16 and Spurs’ rivals have made their moves in the market.
If the White Hart Lane side wishes to make Musacchio their first big-money summer signing, then they may have to pay a premium price as 35% of any transfer fee will go to the player’s former club River Plate.
Musacchio started 32 La Liga matches for Villarreal last term, completing a total of 76 tackles and 108 interceptions. In comparison, Spurs’ number one centre-back Michael Dawson managed just 47 tackles and 67 interceptions.
Would Mateo Musacchio be a good signing for Tottenham Hotspur?
