Carlo Ancelotti drums up Madrid v United clash: ‘There are no friendlies’

Carlo Ancelotti press conference

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti is determined to beat Manchester United in their pre-season friendly clash.

Real Madrid vs Manchester United is certainly a fixture which whets the appetite, be it a Champions League clash or a friendly match 3,000 miles away from Europe.

The last clash between Madrid and the Red Devils occurred in the Champions League last-16 during the 2012/13 season, with the current European champions prevailing 3-2 on aggregate.

This weekend the 109,000-capacity sold out Michigan stadium will play host to the two European heavyweights and Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti is treating it as a vitally important match ahead of their Super Cup final showdown against Sevilla in Cardiff.

“There are no such things as friendlies between Real Madrid and Manchester United – and even less so in a stadium such as this (the 109,000-capacity Michigan stadium),” he said, quoted by Spanish newspaper AS.

“We have to end this tour in the best way possible. We are very proud to be playing this match and we want to put in a good performance before the Super Cup. We need to put in a good game.”

Real Madrid’s intentions to win the match is reflected by their starting XI with the likes of Gareth Bale, Isco, Iker Casillas, Xabi Alonso, Sergio Ramos, Luka Modric and Pepe all raring to go.

Former United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, however, is still nursing a niggling injury and won’t be risked as Los Blancos hope to have him back in time for the Super Cup clash on August 12.

Madrid go into the game on the back of a penalty shootout loss to Inter and a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Roma.

United, under new boss Louis Van Gaal, have so far enjoyed a positive pre-season as they defeated both of their Italian opponents to top the International Champions Cup Group A.
