VIDEO: Ex-Manchester United talisman nets trademark first goal for new club

Nemanja Vidic

Former Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic netted his first Inter goal in typical fashion against Roma.

Nemanja Vidic made a name for himself as a dominant aerial presence during his decorated tenure at Manchester United.

The Serbian bagged 21 goals - mainly with his head - across all competitions over the course of his Red Devils career en route to five Premier League titles, three League Cup triumphs and a Champions League crown.

After eight years representing United, however, the one-time United skipper has moved onto Italian giants Inter to begin a new chapter in his career.

Tasked with learning to marshal a three-man defence and settle into a new league, Vidic has spent the past weeks with his new team-mates on the Nerazzurri’s pre-season tour of America.

Following a penalty shoot-out victory over Real Madrid in Inter’s first game of the Guiness International Champions Cup, the 32-year-old took on his former club in the American capital.

Vidic’s old side got the better of his current employers as United topped Inter on penalties after 90 scoreless minutes, but the Serbian turned in a solid display with some feisty challenges on Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck.

And on Saturday the veteran centre-back continued the process of settling in with the Beneamata by netting his first goal for the club against Serie A rivals Roma in Philadelphia.

The Serbian peeled off his marker on a free-kick from the left flank to hit the back of the net with a precise glancing header on the stroke of half-time, giving his men a 1-0 lead.

Vidic’s effort won’t go on the books as a competitive strike like his 21 career goals for United, but nonetheless comes as a welcome sign for both the player and Inter with the season fast approaching.

Were United right to let Vidic leave this summer?
