Confirmed: Vidal boost for United as Juventus snap up another midfielder

Arturo Vidal

Juventus have confirmed the arrival of Verona midfielder Romulo – sparking speculation that he could be Arturo Vidal's replacement.

Having already brought in Manchester United left back Patrice Evra, Udinese playmaker Roberto Pereyra and Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata since previous manager Antonio Conte left the club, his replacement Massimiliano Allegri has now turned his attention to the centre of midfield.

Despite already having the likes of Andrea Pirlo, Arturo Vidal, Paul Pogba and Claudio Marchisio vying for places in the middle of the park, Juve have moved to bring in more competition for places with the signing of Verona star Romulo.

The 27-year-old, formerly of Fiorentina, spent the season on loan at Verona before securing a permanent move this summer – but his stay was anything but permanent as Juventus have snapped the midfielder of a one-year loan deal worth €1m, with an option to buy him for €6m in a year's time.

Romulo starred for Verona last season, even changing his nationality from Brazilian to Italian ahead of the World Cup, and he would have been in Cesare Prandelli's final 23-man squad had he not suffered an injury and been forced to pull out.

The highly rated midfielder is coming off his best season to date, and will be expecting to feature under Allegri in Turin, but with a number of established midfielders already at the club, it may suggest that one player is leaving – and there are no prizes for guessing who.

The Chilean international is at the centre of one of the summer's longest transfer sagas, with Manchester United seemingly desperate to bring the former Bayer Leverkusen man to Old Trafford in a deal worth over €40m. Juve have so far resisted all approaches from the Red Devils, but the arrival of another midfielder may well push Vidal that one step closer to the exit door.

A versatile, energetic and box-to-box player, Romulo fits a similar mould to Vidal – which could be the biggest suggestion yet that Juventus are at least considering a deal to take Vidal to Old Trafford.
