Manchester United-linked midfielder poised for Valencia move

Benfica midfielder Enzo Perez, who has been linked with Manchester United for some time now, will reportedly join Valencia on Monday.

Benfica's problems in this transfer window look set to continue. The club have already lost goalkeeper Jan Oblak and left back Guilherme Siquiera to Atletico Madrid, centre back Ezequiel Garay to Zenit St. Petersburg, winger Lazar Markovic to Liverpool, and duo Andre Gomes and Rodrigo to Valencia.

Now, Valencia look set to make a third swoop on the Portuguese giants with the expected capture of their Argentine midfielder Enzo Perez. The former Estudiantes star, 28, impressed at the World Cup in Brazil this summer, leading to plenty of interest in him from around Europe.

Yet one of the clubs who have been pursuing him for some time is Manchester United, who were first linked with Perez during the David Moyes era. No deal materialised, but the interest was still being reported even when the Red Devils replaced Moyes with new boss Louis van Gaal.

Earlier this summer, it was reported that Benfica had a £24m price tag on Perez's head, but the last United bid was alleged to have been in the region of £7m - just over a quarter of that asking price. It's therefore no surprise that the clubs didn't come to an agreement, leaving Perez to consider other moves.

And now, his future could be settled after Portuguese press suggested that Perez was due to land in Spain on Monday to complete the deal with Valencia, just days after declaring that he wanted to stay at the Estadio da Luz.

"I am very calm, comfortable and happy at Benfica. On Monday, I travel to Portugal and if the opportunity arises to leave, it must be a mutual decision," he said. "I personally am not looking to leave."

It remains to be seen what the fee being paid by new Valencia boss Nuno is, and we'll also see how close United were to landing the midfielder - even if their attention seems to be fixed on Juventus' Arturo Vidal.
