The Manchester United man has hit top form on the club's tour of the USA and his man-of-the-match award was fine reward for a series of excellent displays.

Ashley Young’s resurgence under Louis van Gaal continued last night as he scored twice against Real Madrid in Manchester United’s 3-1 friendly victory.

The England international has failed to make an impact in recent times at Old Trafford, with his form taking a turn for the worse.

However, under van Gaal he has been shown signs that he is close to getting back to his best.

Young has been utilised as a wing-back in his new manager’s 3-4-1-2 formation that has been impressing all watchers of the Red Devils during their tour of the United States, and he appears to be thriving in his new role.

The 29-year-old has already spoken of his happiness playing in the position, too, saying he has every confidence that he can perform there.

It seems to be working, as Young put in a man-of-the-match performance during their win over Madrid and he was quick to post a picture of his new trophy which can be added to his mantlepiece of achievements when he returns home.

Young’s first goal came after a brilliant United passing move. Wayne Rooney and Darren Fletcher linked up expertly before ball came to Danny Welbeck, who knocked it into Young’s path and the former Aston Villa man did the rest – powering it beyond Iker Casillas in the Madrid goal.

His second was more fortuitous as his cross drifted in at the far past after evading the touches of everybody on the pitch, not that Young was complaining.

It will now be up to him to prove that he can reach these heights with his performances back in England, but he appears to have added some time to a United career that was seemingly heading to an end last season with his displays on the tour so far.

Can Young be a key player for United this season?
