Robbie Savage criticises 'awful' Manchester United youngster

Robbie Savage

Robbie Savage did not hold back regarding Manchester United youngster Michael Keane's performance against Real Madrid.

Manchester United beat Real Madrid 3-1 at the weekend, in front of an astounding crowd of 109,000 fans.

The contest in Michigan saw Ashley Young score two and Javier Hernandez the third, and also presented an invaluable chance for defender Michael Keane to test himself against the world's best.

Keane was on loan at Derby County last season, so the match against the Champions League winners was quite a step up from the Championship.

Despite the step up, BBC pundit Robbie Savage, himself once a trainee at United, was unforgiving in his assessment of the England under-21 international, who conceded a penalty for Real's only goal.

Keane was graded a 5/10 by HITC's Dan Connor in our player ratings, qualified by the comment: "Skinned by Gareth Bale and gave away a penalty. A harsh lesson to be learned against top sides."

Days earlier Louis van Gaal had suggested the chance was there for Keane to step up, stating: “We are looking for defenders,” he revealed.“Defenders have gone and we have to replace them. But I like Tyler Blackett and Michael Keane."

Whether last night's match did anything to persuade him Keane is not ready remains to be seen, but if he is given a start in the ICC Final against Liverpool, then that will be a big vote of confidence in the 21-year-old, and one he will be determined to take.

What did you make of Keane, and Savage's comment?
