Arsenal player ratings v Monaco: Falcao downs Gunners - but Sanchez shows plenty of promise

Wenger

Arsene Wenger's side should have had a penalty in the second half but had to settle for a 1-0 defeat, meaning they failed to retain the Emirates Cup.

Wojciech Szczesny - 6/10

Didn't do too much wrong and was helpless as an unmarked Radamel Falcao headed home in the first half.

Nacho Monreal - 5.5/10

Got more involved going forward than yesterday but was often exposed by Monaco's pace down the right-hand side. Played at centre-back for a period in the second half. If anyone is a weak link in this Arsenal team, it is Monreal.

Laurent Koscielny - 6/10

The Ligue 1 side looked like they could get through the Arsenal defence all too easily, while Koscielny showed poor marking for goal.

Calum Chambers - 6/10

It was back to reality for Chambers against Monaco, who was shown what kind of opposition he may need to regularly keep out at Arsenal. The former Saint did make some great clearances but was guilty of poor marking, just like his team-mates.

Mathieu Debuchy - 6.5/10

Showed physical presence and sent in some good crosses. Was replaced late on and still hasn't left first gear.

Jack Wilshere - 6/10

Showed some slick passing and found himself in plenty of advanced positions. A rash tackle earned him a first-half booking, however, with Monaco then scoring from the resultant free kick. Forced a good save after the break but looked weak against the strength of Monaco's midfielders.

Mikel Arteta - 6/10

Had to help out Monreal down the left in the first half but looks as though his influence is waning. Often lost possession and gave away fouls.

Alexis Sanchez - 8/10

A constant threat in the first half, even if the Chilean is nowhere near his best yet. Moved up front for the second half after Olivier Giroud came off and was easily the Gunners' best forward player. Substituted after 73 minutes.

Aaron Ramsey - 6.5/10

Played some great passes but could have done with Mesut Ozil alongside him for assistance. There is perhaps an argument that Ramsey is being overplayed by Wenger already, though.

Santi Cazorla - 7/10

Got forward a lot and displayed his passing prowess in the final third. Cazorla did not track back all that often but brought plenty of creativity to the party. Does the Spaniard have a future at the Emirates?

Olivier Giroud - 6/10

Was a lively presence in the first half and made way for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain at half-time.

Substitutes

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain - 7/10

Came on at the break and made some great runs down the right.

Ignasi Miquel - 5/10

Also came on at half-time and played at left-back for a period. Was booked and exposed at times - just like Monreal before him.

Gedion Zelalem - 6.5/10

Introduced with 17 minutes to go and showed some bright sparks.

Mathieu Flamini - 5/10

Came on at the same time as Zelalem but still managed to receive a booking for a poor challenge.

Chuba Akpom - 7/10

Another late introduction, Akpom was brought down to win what should have been a penalty, though referee Martin Atkinson reneged on the initial decision and gave a free kick outside the box.

Hector Bellerin was also brought on in the 89th minute.
