United boss Louis Van Gaal believes Robin Van Persie won’t be fit to start the season.

Manchester United boss Louis Van Gaal told the press after yesterday’s 3-1 friendly victory over Real Madrid that striker Robin Van Persie may not be ready to start the new Premier League season.

The 30-year-old striker is still on a three-week holiday after his appearance at this summer’s World Cup was extended to the final weekend.

Despite being injury free, a taxing four weeks in Brazil on international duty left Van Persie in need of a rest and Van Gaal ordered him to take an extended break.

Now, with the striker returning to training on Monday and eager to make an impression, his wishes of starting the Red Devils’ opening Premier League fixture against Swansea City have taken a blow after Van Gaal cast doubts over his inclusion.

“Robin wants to play every game, I know that, but so do the other 30 players in the squad. But players have to train and Robin needs a full training regime behind him before he can play again. He said, quoted by the Mirror.

“Robin will begin training on Monday, but he won’t play in the friendly against Valencia on August 12, definitely not.”

“And he won’t play in the Premier League at the start either, I think. People can criticise me for that decision but I know what you have to do with players who have had three weeks’ holiday. Hopefully, Robin will get his fitness back very fast. But at this moment, he won’t be playing."

The Old Trafford outfit have been handed a favourable start to the season as they take on the three promoted sides within the first five games.

Van Persie’s record against bottom-half teams has been formidable over the years so he will be extremely keen to get his match fitness back up to scratch and play a big part in the club’s opening set of fixtures.
