Why would any club benefit from signing Iker Casillas?

Iker Casillas Spain

Spanish captain is fighting for his future at Real Madrid following poor form at club and international level.

Iker Casillas’ availability from Real Madrid would have sent shock-waves down the transfer market this time two years ago, but the fact he remains with the European Champions says everything about his form.

Once considered the best goalkeeper in the world, and a seemingly untouchable player even for the richest of clubs, Casillas’ stock is now at an all-time low.

With Keylor Navas seemingly arriving at the Bernabeu within the next week, and Diego Lopez still on hand, why hasn’t Casillas been snapped up this window?

Firstly, he’d be expensive, not so much in terms of the actual transfer fee it would take for Madrid to sell him, but his wage demands. All reports linking him with Arsenal over the last fortnight have spoken on a rumoured £5-7million annual wage packet, a sum that is simply too much.

The Spaniard’s form has also been poor for some time now. Just look at the way Madrid almost lost out in the Champions League final back in May, and how Spain crashed out of this summer’s World Cup. Most goals that have been conceded, particularly at international level over the last few months, have been down to him.

Finally, he’s no spring chicken. At 33-years-old, he isn’t even playing regular football. Diego Lopez started 36 of the 38 La Liga games last term, reducing Casillas to the bench. Jose Mourinho made the brave decision to drop him, while Carlo Ancelotti did little to reinstate his previously dominant position.

Two top-class managers do not overlook a man of Casillas’ stature for another goalkeeper just a year younger than him unless there are issues. For Madrid he’s simply not good enough anymore, and for anyone looking to sign him, he is not worth the massive wage bill considering his recent poor performances.

Take nothing away from the man's career. He is a legend between the posts, no doubt. But perhaps his seemingly irreplaceable spot in the side for club and country over the last decade has eventually led to his downfall.

Will Real Madrid hold on to Iker Casillas this season?
