Everton have been famed as 'the People's club' for many years, with the club taking an active involvement in community work around Merseyside. That image has only been enhanced after forward Steven Naismith made an incredible gesture - donating tickets to unemployed people in Liverpool ahead of the new season.
"I come from Ayrshire in the west of Scotland and spent a lot of my life in Glasgow - a city that, at times, has suffered from high unemployment," Naismith said. "Liverpool has a similar history and I am aware that, through no fault of their own, there are many unemployed in Liverpool trying hard to find a job who may not be able to afford a ticket.
"I thought this might be a small gesture to help those in that situation to enjoy a day out at one of our league matches. Hopefully it can bring some joy to many people," added the 27-year-old.
Less than a week ago, Everton made the stunning £28m move to sign loan striker Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian international spent the season on loan at Goodison Park last season, but with Chelsea open to selling the 21-year-old, Lukaku made his move permanent.
Now, another Chelsea youngster has been targeted in Ghanaian winger Christian Atsu. The 22-year-old played for Vitesse on loan last season, and Everton had hoped to land the former Porto man in a similar deal - but reports suggest that a deal has collapsed today.
Manager Roberto Martinez could now cast his attention to another central midfielder, with Manchester United's Tom Cleverley once again linked with the club. The 24-year-old enjoyed a spell under Martinez at Wigan Athletic, and with Louis van Gaal looking to bring more midfielders to Old Trafford, Cleverley could reunite with the Spaniard on Merseyside.
