MLS team of the week: Robbie Keane and Landon Donovan shine in week 21

USA Flag 2

LA Galaxy duo Robbie Keane and Landon Donovan were two of the standout performers of week 21, as they helped their side to a 3-1 win over the Portland Timbers.

GK – Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake)

Rimando matched the league’s all-time shutout record in the 1-0 win over the Colorado Rapids with the 112th clean sheet of his MLS career, having held the high-powered Red Bulls offence to 1-1 draw earlier in the week.

RB – Shaun Francis (San Jose Earthquakes)

One of the main reasons for San Jose’s surprise 1-0 win over Seattle was Francis’s defensive outing against the intimidating Marco Pappa, who the Jamaican was able to shut down for the entire game.

CB – Nat Borchers (Real Salt Lake)

Borchers put in an unbelievable performance against the Rapids on the weekend, even after his centre-back partner was sent off just after half-time, keeping the in-form DeShorn Brown in check for the 90 minutes.

CB – Jeff Larentowicz (Chicago Fire)

Forced into an unfamiliar centre-back role over the past week due to injuries, Larentowicz didn’t look at all out of place as his side conceded just the one goal in their two draws, begging the question of whether he should remain there for the foreseeable future.

LB – Chris Wingert (Real Salt Lake)

Another member of the Salt Lake back-line to shine this past week, the veteran left-back was not just great in defence but also going forward, setting up both of his side’s goals in their two games.

DM – Dax McCarty (New York Red Bulls)

Scored a stunning equaliser against New England which spurred his side on to a 2-1 win, while also putting in an excellent defensive shift to shield an inexperienced back-line.

CM – Lee Nguyen (New England Revolution)

Two goals and an assist in the Revs’ 3-0 midweek win over the Rapids snapped an eight-game losing streak, reminding fans of his MVP-calibre form from the first few months of the season.

CM – Michael Bradley (Toronto FC)

While he was powerless to prevent his side falling 3-0 to D.C. United earlier in the week, the US international had his best performance since returning to MLS in the 2-0 win over the Montreal Impact, providing the assists for both goals.

RW – Fabian Castillo (FC Dallas)

Returning to the Dallas lineup, Castillo made an immediate impact, hassling the Chivas USA defence all night, before providing a perfect pass for Tesho Akindele to covert for the 1-0 win.

LW – Landon Donovan (LA Galaxy)

LA have hit a rich vein of form over recent weeks and a lot of that is due to the form of Donovan, the MLS legend proving much more influential in the 3-1 win over Portland than his lone assist would suggest.

ST – Robbie Keane (LA Galaxy)

Much like Donovan, Keane has been helping spearhead LA’s rise up the table, a brace and assist in the weekend’s win meaning he’s now found the scoresheet five times over the past four games.
