Could Joe Allen be Liverpool's 'game changing' player this season?

Joe Allen Liverpool

Joe Allen doesn't seem to be a regular starter, but he suits changes to systems and could prove to be a good option.

Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen has suggested that no matter how many changes to personnel or the system this season, the Reds seem to be clicking during the pre-season campaign.

Allen is quoted in the Liverpool Echo, saying: “The positive thing is no matter what changes we make to the team or formation, we seem to be doing really well.

“Everyone looks in good nick and getting up to speed in good time."

It is early days to suggest that everything is going swimmingly for the Reds, as they have yet to play a competitive fixture. As soon as the season gets underway with some meaningful games, we are likely to see what this Liverpool side is all about.

But like last season, central to any changes in system of style of player could be Joe Allen. When Liverpool switched to the diamond formation from March onwards last season, he slotted into the system effectively - though with the addition of Emre Can during the summer transfer window, he is going to face fierce competition. Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho were the main starters at the tip of the diamond towards the end of last season - whilst Lazar Markovic and Adam Lallana could also be competing for a place in that area.

There have been times when Allen has been able to make a difference from the bench in games and has given the side a bit more control in the middle of the park, but his ability to play in all of the central roles means that he is always a good option for Brendan Rodgers.

Of course there are areas of his game he needs to improve on, such as being more clinical in the final third - but he can make a telling contribution in order to bring a bit more calm and control to Liverpool's game. If he improved on that aspect of his game he could become a big player for the Reds.

Inevitably players are going to be rotated given the club's extra games this season, and the desire to compete in the business end of all four competitions they're entering this season means that players will be rotated. Allen could be a big rotation option for Liverpool this term.
