Report - Pochettino has doubts over Younes Kaboul

Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino is reportedly chewing the fat with regards to Younes Kaboul's future.

The Daily Mail claims Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has serious doubts over the ability of Younes Kaboul to play in his back four this season.

Pochettino has been working away throughout the summer to find his ideal defensive system and the latest reports suggest he’s ready to draft in Mateo Musacchio from Villarreal to add defensive strength before the Premier League gets under way.

To facilitate that transfer, a current defender is more than likely going to have to leave and it appears to be a choice between the experienced Michael Dawson and the French centre-back.

“He (Musacchio) is well known to Spurs boss Maurico Pochettino who is looking to toughen up his defence and has already shown he is willing to listen to offers for Michael Dawson while doubts remain over Younes Kaboul,” reports the Mail.

Kaboul made just 13 appearances in the Premier League last season, which suggests the club have grown accustomed to forming a defensive system without having him available for the majority of games.

Should Kaboul avoid the axe before the new league campaign starts then he could be playing for his Tottenham career over the first few games before the transfer window shuts until the winter.

What Kaboul has gone for him in terms of getting that chance is that a deal for Musacchio doesn’t look as though it’s going to be an easy or simple one.

The Mail suggests talks are on going over a move for the Argentine but doesn’t indicate that a deal is particularly close or that there has been any agreement over the reported £20 million fee.

If Musacchio signs that will leave Pochettino with a core of defenders in the Argentine, Dawson, Kaboul, Vlad Chiriches and Jan Vertonghen but it’s debatable whether Kaboul should be axed ahead of Dawson.

Dawson does guarantee the experience but Kaboul represents a challenge for Pochettino if the coach is prepared to work with the player to alleviate the doubts he apparently has.
