FC Schalke manager Jens Keller has revealed that long term Arsenal target Julian Draxler asked to return to training early ahead of the new Bundesliga season.
Draxler was part of the victorious World Cup squad and while there are frequent questions over his future at Schalke, Keller has revealed he’s getting ready to have a big impact this season.
“The idea came from him (Draxler) alone – He is ready to tear up this season,” Keller is quoted by Bild.
Arsenal have previously actively tried to do business with Schalke for Draxler, but the German has always reiterated his commitment to his current employers and any future move looks unlikely until at least the winter.
Draxler’s experience over the summer with his country in Brazil, will further convince him that he doesn’t need to leave the Bundesliga in order to get noticed by German national coach Jorgi Low.
The price Arsenal have previously been quoted for the forward is around the £40 million mark, which is the reported release clause in his current contract which expires in the summer of 2018.
Arsenal certainly have the finances if they want to mount a move in the future and the German has the qualities of the sort of player Arsene Wenger would be interested in.
Keller is now in a difficult position because he has to temper the ambition and eagerness of the player to get stuck into pre-season training all over again, while guarding him against possible injury.
He had problems with a ruptured tendon last season, which at one point threatened to keep him out of the World Cup in Brazil.
Keller will be wary of exposing him to too much physical strain ahead of schedule because he’s a very important player for a team trying to break down the dominance of Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund in German football.
If Draxler hits top form for Schalke over the first chunk of the season, the rumour mill is going to spin into overdrive as the winter approaches.
Do you see Draxler ever leaving Schalke?
