'His best shape for three years' - Wenger demands top campaign from Wilshere

Wilshere Ramsey

Arsene Wenger is expecting a huge season for midfielder Jack Wilshere at Arsenal.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has suggested Jack Wilshere could be facing the biggest season of his Arsenal career.

The Frenchman has revealed that in his opinion, Wilshere is in the best shape he’s been in for the last three years as he toys over whether to convert the England international into a deeper holding midfield player.

“This is a big season for Jack but he is in his best pre-season shape for three years,” said Wenger.

“He is rid of his ankle problems and if he can maintain that I think he will have a great season. But he needs games and I agree that this is a very important season for him.”

Wenger recently hinted that Wilshere could take care of the role in front of Arsenal’s back four, which has seen the Gunners linked with Sami Khedira and the Bender brothers who play for Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen respectively.

Wenger’s comments also suggest that he’s had productive discussions with Wilshere since he’s been back in training with the club, after he was snapped smoking, again, while on holiday in Las Vegas.

Wenger has always been a staunch believer that professional footballers should take complete care of their health because of the physical demands that come hand in hand with playing Premier League football.

It’s arguable that should Wilshere be converted into more of a defensive player, he will have more ground to cover in front of the back four and linking up with the attacking players in midfield and up front.

Therefore, the strict pre-season training regime Wenger appears to have put him under will aid him in terms of strength and physical stamina as sides could target him if he’s used in a new position.

He certainly has the brain to play a holding role and his core strength is impressive. Fingers crossed he’s able to maintain this level of fitness throughout the coming season.
