Lampard hails 'fantastic opportunity' at Manchester City after loan deal confirmed

Frank Lampard 2

Chelsea legend Frank Lampard has joined Manchester City on loan until March.

The moment all Chelsea fans have dreaded has suddenly loomed, as Frank Lampard has officially been named as a Manchester City player until the start of the MLS campaign in March of next year.

Lampard recently left The Blues after his contract expired at the end of last season and went on to join newly formed New York City FC on a free transfer. But the Chelsea legend will now play for one of their main title rivals next term as he awaits NYC FC's inaugural MLS campaign.

NYC FC are owned by the Premier League champions and therefore a move to City to remain fit and healthy seemed a likely scenario. David Villa, who also recently switched to the big apple, was loaned out to their other sister team in the form of A-League side Melbourne City - meaning there was not a space at the A-League side for Lampard, leaving Manchester his only logical destination.

He has now spoken of the move, telling the official Manchester City website:

"Joining up with Manchester City is a fantastic opportunity for me to continue to train and play at the top level and make sure I am in top condition for New York City.

"It has been an amazing few days for me since the unveiling in Brooklyn and everyone connected with both clubs has been fantastic to me. This is a new chapter of my career and I'm really excited about the experience.

"I met Manuel and some of the players in New York and I'm looking forward to getting into training and making a contribution for Manchester City ahead of my move over to New York."

For some Chelsea fans it is a definite kick in the teeth to see their hero and club record goal-scorer 'abandon' his old club to play for a rival. But in regards to keeping himself fit and ready for a new chapter in the US this is the best move for the England international. Time will tell how Chelsea fans really feel about his decision.

Will Lampard's decision be respected by Chelsea fans?
