Patrice Evra’s move to Juventus last month came as a surprise. The defender seemed set to remain at Manchester United for one more season after signing a contract extension in May, but eventually he changed his mind.
The Italian champions are reported to have paid United a transfer fee of £1.2 million to secure the signature of the France international on a two-year contract.
The left-back may be 33 years of age, but at the Bianconeri, he is expected to be a regular first-team player under new coach Massimiliano Allegri.
The former AS Monaco star is very much fit as he showed during his debut for Juventus on Wednesday.
Evra came on at half time for Kwadwo Asamoah during the two-time European champions’ pre-season friendly against the ISL Stars at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta.
The veteran played the entire second half and helped his new team to a comprehensive 8-1 victory to kick off their pre-season tour of Asia and Australia in style.
After the match, Evra spoke of his delight and expressed his surprise at finding out how popular Juventus are in Indonesia.
‘I didn’t expect such a welcome from them (Juve fans in Jakarta)!’ he told the Turin-based club’s official website. ‘I had the exact same feeling when I played for Manchester United and it’s one of the reasons why I chose a team like Juve’.
‘I’d like to thank all my team-mates, the manager, the masseuses, everyone!’ he added. ‘They’ve all given me an incredibly warm welcome, I already feel part of this family’.
Will Manchester United miss Patrice Evra?
