The holding midfield duo have been linked with moves to the Premier League this summer.
With Sami Khedira reportedly set to pack his bacgs for a move to the Emirates this summer, and Real Madrid open to offers for Xabi Alonso, it makes no sense whatsoever for the club to lose one, let alone both, of their holding midfielders.
Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez’s arrival at the Bernabeu have no doubt put the pair’s position under threat, but they cannot afford to sell their defensively minded player’s.
In the Super Cup final next week, Ancelotti is expected to play Rodriguez, Kroos and Luka Modric in behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale. An immense line-up, no question, and it should be more than enough to see of Sevilla.
But where will the cover be for the back four against tougher opposition? The man to break up the play and cut off supply lines from the likes of Messi, Neymar and now Suarez at Barcelona. Modric is a top talent, but he cannot be relied on as a defensive midfielder.
Alonso specialises in malfunctioning attacks, but can also be a fine distributor of the ball going forward. Real Madrid still need him.
Khedira is the one who could go, should a big fee for his services come in it would be hard to reject it considering his contractual situation. But if it doesn’t, keep him, Madrid will play over 50 games this season, and Alonso cannot play them all.
Illara is another defensive midfielder on Real’s books, but lacks the experience and game-time to be able to use him in the role all season. They cannot sell both Alonso and Khedira, and would be wise to keep both. Otherwise the midfield could crumble, lose all balance, and leave Madrid vulnerable to conceding a heavy amount of goals.
Will Alonso and Khedira be at Madrid for the coming season?
