Transfer Bin: Atletico to sell two and launch bid for Andre Schurrle

Andre Schurrle, Germany National Football Team

Andre Schurrle is being linked with a potential exit from Chelsea this summer.

Portuguese publication A Bola are the latest offenders in our Transfer Bin series, with the suggestion that Atletico Madrid could be ready to sell two players as they try and buy Andre Schurrle from Chelsea.

There have been lingering reports for weeks over Atletico’s reported interest in the German, but the idea they could axe players to fund a move for the World Cup winner is flawed.

The most obvious flaw is the number of players that Diego Simeone has seen leave his club so far this summer.

Thibaut Courtois returned to Chelsea along with Diego Costa and Filipe Luis in permanent deals, which ripped the spine out of the side, which won La Liga last season.

The report seems to be based on the assumption that two of Cristian Rodriguez, Joshua Guilavogui and Emiliano Insua will be sold to create funds for a fee.

Considering Chelsea paid Bayer Leverkusen £18 million to sign him, that fee could understandably be the other side of £20 million.

Even if two of those players were sold, Atletico would still be relying on Chelsea’s willingness to sell to them, which is most likely born out of the business they have already done with the Stamford Bridge club this summer.

Moving on, there’s also Schurrle’s squad status at the Blues to consider.

He may not be the first choice winger or forward at the club, but he is a priceless squad player who it would make little sense for Jose Mourinho to sell.

Willian, Eden Hazard and Diego Costa are all arguably ahead of him in the attacking pecking order, but Mourinho will be fully aware of the fitness issues and problems, which can be created by a long season.

Therefore, someone with the ample talent Schurrle possesses, will be a crucial player over the course of a long season.

Rubbish Rating: It’s understandable why Schurrle could want to move to a side where he’s likely to play more regularly but Jose Mourinho is never going to let him leave, especially off the back of a successful World Cup campaign.

Do you think Andre Schurrle will leave Chelsea?
