Are Manchester United really ‘favourites’ for Real Madrid star Angel di Maria?

19 Old Trafford

With Paris Saint-Germain pulling out of the race to sign Angel di Maria, Manchester United are believed to be in pole position to sign the Real Madrid star.

Manchester United supposedly received a boost in their quest to sign Angel di Maria on Thursday, as Paris Saint-Germain confirmed that they have pulled out of negotiations with Real Madrid.

PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi said at the unveiling of their £50 million signing David Luiz: ‘We spoke to Real about Di María but he was too expensive’.

This has supposedly made United the ‘favourites’ to sign the Argentina international, who is a world-class winger and was one of the best players at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil earlier this summer.

The Red Devils have long been linked with a move for the 26-year-old, who was one of the three best players for Madrid in 2013-14, helping them win the Copa del Rey and the Champions League (click here to read more).

So with Madrid clearly open to selling the Argentine, United reportedly interested in him and PSG pulling out of talks, this transfer saga is surely heading towards one conclusion: Di Maria switching to Old Trafford.

Or is it?

Earlier this summer, it was reported that Di Maria preferred PSG to United. With Champions League football on offer and the French club in a better position at the moment than the Manchester outfit, it was not hard to understand why the former Benfica star would choose to move to the Ligue 1 champions.

With PSG now out of the running, will Di Maria, who returned to training earlier this week after his summer break, be willing to switch to United, who are at the start of a massive rebuilding project and have added just two major signings to a squad that finished seventh in the Premier League last season?

Al-Khelaifi stated that Di Maria is ‘too expensive’ for PSG, who paid Chelsea £50m for Luiz before the World Cup. Which means that Madrid are not going to let go of the Argentine for a cheap price.

Just like their French rivals, the 10-time European champions have to comply with FFP regulations, having signed James Rodriguez and Toni Kroos for big money already this summer.

United have money to burn, and this could give them an advantage over PSG if they are really keen on signing the ex-Rosario Central star.

However, just like last summer Ancelotti could eventually decide to retain the services of Di Maria. The former AC Milan and Chelsea boss rates the Argentine very highly – last summer he let go of Mesut Ozil but kept Di Maria.

This time too Ancelotti could convince Madrid president Florentino Perez to keep Di Maria in the team.
