Southampton expected to complete Forster swoop in coming days

England goalkeeper Fraser Forster is expected to make a swift exit as he signs for Southampton after Celtic's elimination from the Champions League.

The Celtic goalkeeper was on the wrong end of a 6-1 aggregate scoreline when the Bhoys met Legia Warsaw in the Champions League qualifying rounds, and now a quick move to Southampton is in the pipeline.

The Saints are keen to recruit a new goalkeeper, following a disastrous spell last season when Artur Boruc broke his hand and both Kelvin Davis and Paulo Gazzaniga failed to make a positive impression on the first team set-up.

Forster seems an ideal target, aged just twenty-six, the former Newcastle stopper works with Southampton goalkeeping coach Dave Watson when on England duty, with Watson taking on the role of England's goalkeeping coach as Ray Clemence takes a back seat in Roy Hodgson's backroom staff.

Watson and Forster are understood to have a close working relationship, with the Saints coach well-regarded by both Joe Hart and Ben Foster, who were coached by the former Barnsley goalkeeper during their time at Birmingham City.

Southampton are believed to have already agreed an £8m deal with Celtic for the 6ft 6in shot-stopper, with the completion of the transfer having to wait until Celtic's Champions League fate was decided.

Following their elimination at the hands of Legia Warsaw, it is expected that the move could materialise rapidly.

Forster is believed to regard a move to the Premier League as providing tougher competition as well as being capable of enhancing his England chances, during an SPL season that is devoid of Rangers, Hearts or Hibernian.

Saints boss Ronald Koeman is also thought to be keen on Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk, 22, who signed for the Hoops from Groningen in 2012.

If the two did make the switch to St. Mary's, they would continue a recent trend of ex-Celtic players joining the Saints, which includes Artur Boruc, Jos Hooiveld, Danny Fox and Victor Wanyama.

Will Fraser Forster rival Joe Hart by making a move to the Premier League?
