Manchester United bid for Thomas Vermaelen confirmed

Vermaelen Captain

Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Manchester United have placed an offer in for Thomas Vermaelen and are part of a group of clubs trying to sign him.

Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Manchester United have made a bid for Thomas Vermaelen.

In the Frenchman’s press-conference today he said that United were amongst a clutch of clubs trying to do a deal for the Belgium international defender.

It is thought that a bid of around £10 million could persuade the Gunners to part with their club captain and Wenger explained today that it would be hard to keep hold of Vermaelen during this transfer window.

He said: "Vermaelen could leave as he needs to play now. We've received bids. Man United are part of the group of bidders."

It is thought that Barcelona are also interested in the defender, who has found chances hard to come over the past season at the Emirates.

The form of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny last season kept him out of the starting line-up in his favoured position, at centre-back and, as such, he has had to move on.

Vermaelen is currently out injured with a hamstring injury, but should be back in training soon – as it is not considered to be too severe.

He made just 14 appearances in an Arsenal shirt last season and, despite Wenger being a fan of the Belgian’s talents, it is thought that it could be best for both parties if a move was to happen.

It appears that the 28-year-old will now have the choice of joining either Barcelona or United, with the two European giants being the front-runners for his signature.

If he was to join United, he would be included as part of a three-man defence in Louis van Gaal’s newly utilised 3-4-1-2 formation, whilst he would be part of a more familiar back-two if he was to switch to Barcelona.

Would Vermaelen be a good buy for United?
