Do promising on-loan duo have a future at Chelsea?

Romeu

Ryan Bertrand and Oriel Romeu's short-term futures lie away from Stamford Bridge - but what about the long run?

In slightly differing circumstances, the Blues duo have found themselves elsewhere this season, Bertrand at Southampton and Romeu at Stuttgart, both on loan.

The overall trajectory of their Chelsea career paths, however, bears many similarities.

Both were considered good enough for the first-team squad under previous managers but no longer. And yet Bertrand and Romeu have been valued enough by Jose Mourinho and his team not to be let go on permanent deals.

Does that suggest they have long-term futures at Stamford Bridge?

The key difference, of course, seems to be the option for Southampton to land Bertrand on a permanent deal.

The 25-year-old has joined the Saints with a view leaving Chelsea for good at the end of the season should Ronald Koeman's side want him. With Filipe Luis now frequenting the left-back spot - and Cesar Azpilicueta able to cover - it may prove the right move for Bertrand should he want first-team football.

At the same time, however, the Blues are yet to see what Bertrand can do once he is playing week in week out.

Wit Romeu, the situation looks more simple, even though the Spaniard looked closer to leaving west London on a permanent deal earlier this summer. Valencia representatives were reportedly in London trying to bring the 22-year-old to Spain for at least another year, though Romeu has since been awarded a new three-year deal and sent on loan to Germany.

As such, the midfielder looks like his future lies at Chelsea, despite there being stronger competition for places in his position.

Come the end of the season, however, both have as much chance of leaving the Blues for good as they do returning to Stamford Bridge. Their futures appear to be in their own hands; if they can impress with their performances this season and indicate their desire to fight for a Chelsea place, Mourinho will be happy to welcome them back.
