Wenger: £16m Arsenal newbie can be a top player for us

Arsene Wenger has said that he feels that Calum Chambers has the potential to be a brilliant signing for Arsenal.

Arsene Wenger has explained that he feels he got value for money when buying Calum Chambers for £16 million, saying that he thinks the 19-year-old can go on and be a star for the club.

The former Saints star’s move to Arsenal went through last month and he appears to have already impressed during his brief time at the Emirates – with his manager singing his praises at a press-conference today.

Wenger said: “I'm a great believer that we spent a lot of money for him, that's true but in the longer term it is well spent - that is the most important thing. When a player is bought for a longer period you can never say it's expensive. At the moment it's expensive yes but I don't regret it.

“He can play a major role because in what I observe he has the qualities to impose himself in this part of the team. I believe he can play in defensive midfield and that's where I see him.”

It will be a big step up for Chambers this season, as he looks to develop at one of the country's elite clubs.

The young defender was one of the many Southampton stars to depart St. Mary’s for big money this summer, but there is a widely-held notion that he may just become the best out of the bunch.

The likes of Adam Lallana and Luke Shaw left the South-Coast, to join Liverpool and Manchester United respectively, but the feeling at Saints was that Chambers had the potential to surpass either of their other two world-class talents.

Chambers played 21 times for Southampton last season and was very impressive – with his boundless energy from right-full back catching the eye.

Wenger has already expressed a desire to use him in a more central role, though, with his versatility one of the reasons the veteran French manager was convinced to sign him.

So far in his Arsenal career, Chambers has appeared at centre-back and looked adept in the role – slotting in well during the club’s Emirates Cup campaign.

It is unlikely he will be used there when the season starts, as a first-choice selection, but it seems that Wenger has already been won over the England youth international’s potential and is excited about his development at the club.
