The hugely popular sci-fi strategy video game is coming to the table top
Card and board game giant, Fantasy Flight Games has joined forces with Firaxis to bring a board game version of the hit turn based strategy game XCOM: Enemy Unknown.
XCOM The Board Game will combine traditional board game fare with a digital companion app that helps keep track of play.
"The app's primary function," according to the game description, "is to coordinate the escalating alien invasion, randomly selecting from one of five different invasion plans. Each invasion plan represents a general outline that the alien commanders will use to coordinate the arrival of new UFOs, plan strikes against your base, and respond to your successes or failures as it seeks to conquer Earth. The app manages all of these tasks and heightens the game's tension as it forces you to respond in real-time"
Fantasy Flight also state the app will help you learn how to play.
The game can be played solo or cooperatively with up to four players and sets you in the role of the Earth’s last defence against an alien invasion
“Where the world’s militaries have failed to stand against the alien invaders, you must succeed,“ reads the XCOM synopsis. “To do so, you must make strategic use of the resources available to you. You must launch Interceptors to shoot down alien UFOs, assign soldiers to key missions, research alien technology, and use that technology to defend your base, all while you try to keep the world from collapsing just long enough that you can coordinate one final mission to repel the invaders for good.”
Core gameplay will use a press-your-luck system where players have to keep rolling a string of increasingly risky dice rolls to overcome challenges.
The game comes boxed with 8 interceptor miniatures, 16 plastic soldiers, 24 UFOs and over 200 game cards. Five XCOM custom dice also come with the game.
For those of you stateside the first demo of the game will be available next week at GenCon 2014 in Indianapolis. Fantasy Flight state XCOM The Board Game is scheduled to hit retailers in the fourth quarter of 2014.
