Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey says he wants to become a goalscoring midfielder for his side in the same vein as Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard during their prime.
Ramsey was named Arsenal’s player of season for 2013-14, despite missing a chunk of the campaign with a thigh strain which arguably derailed the club’s title hopes, scoring an impressive 16 goals in 35 games.
Now back healthy for the 2014-15 season, the 23-year-old Welshman is relishing the prospect of evolving into the attacking talisman he set out to become upon first arriving at the Emirates in 2008 from Cardiff City in a £5 million deal.
‘I see myself as that midfielder who can score goals for Arsenal and I think that's important,’ he told The Daily Telegraph.
‘It's proven over the years to be important for successful sides to have goalscoring midfielders and, hopefully, I'll do the same this season. The likes of Gerrard and Lampard have done it for many years on a consistent basis and that will be my aim now to do that.
‘I've always felt I'd be a goalscoring midfielder. Before my serious injury, I had broken into the team and scored a few goals. I've always believed in my ability to do that and I've always been in goalscoring situations but I haven't been as composed as I was last season.
‘I just felt like I had a lot more time in front of goal, whereas in the past I rushed a few decisions and shots that I made.’
Prior to 2013-14, Ramsey’s previous highest-scoring campaign was 2009-10, when he netted four times in 29 games, before a double leg fracture suffered in February 2010 against Stoke seriously hampered his progress with the club over the next season.
Now one of the Gunners’ most integral players, Ramsey scored the winning-goal in the 3-2 extra-time FA Cup final win over Hull City to seal the club its first trophy since 2005, and the Welsh international is targeting more silverware in 2014-15.
‘Prior to last season, it was all about the fact Arsenal hadn’t won anything for a long time and now we’ve finally put an end to that,’ he said.
‘The feeling we had after the final, we want to have more of that. It was the best feeling I’ve had as a professional and I want to be more successful over the coming years.’
