Pochettino: 'I've not been given any targets'

Some say Spurs should target the Champions League places, but Pochettino doesn't appear to have a specific target in mind.

Tottenham Head Coach Mauricio Pochettino has said he hasn't been given any targets for the season ahead of his first campaign in charge at White Hart Lane.

Pochettino takes over a side that had a disappointing campaign last term which saw two men sacked in Andre Villas-Boas and Tim Sherwood as they failed to qualify for the Champions League, suffering defeats to some of the title challenging sides along the way as well.

The Argentine is quoted, saying: "I have not been given any targets. But we need a balanced squad to put our philosophy into practice and we need the results to keep belief high."

They're interesting quotes from Pochettino, particularly given that in recent years Spurs have seen themselves as a club that should be challenging for Champions League qualification every year.

Chairman Daniel Levy has also been accused of being 'trigger happy' when it comes to removing managers from their posts, so the quotes from the new man in charge hint that he will be given time to build a team capable of Champions League qualification.

The five-year deal that was handed to Pochettino was a sign that Levy is prepared to give Pochettino to build a team in his image and get the best out of the players who signed during a £100 million outlay last summer.

Pre-season has shown some positives signs but the new Spurs boss appears to keen to keep external expectations separate from his own. The club will be considered as one of the candidates who can finish in the top four again this season, but are perhaps viewed as one of the outsiders.

Their opening games against West Ham United, Queens Park Rangers and Liverpool cover three teams with very different ambitions. Winning all three of those games would give fans, and the club, reasons to be optimistic.

What would be a good season for Tottenham?
