Transfer expert: Aston Villa fighting to prevent Vlaar exit

Italian transfer expert Alfredo Pedullà reports that Aston Villa are holding firm despite attempts from two Serie A sides to sign Ron Vlaar.

Ron Vlaar's World Cup campaign with the Netherlands has written his name on several Italian side's shopping lists, but Aston Villa seem desperate to keep him.

Lazio have been strongly linked with Vlaar over the last few weeks and have reportedly made approaches that have so far been rebuffed.

The Biancocelesti's city rivals Roma, who may be about to lose Mehdi Benatia, have also been tipped to step in with a bid.

The Dutch defender's contract at Aston Villa expires next summer, so it has been suggested that the Premier League outfit may consider cashing him in now.

But, according to Italian football journalist Alfredo Pedullà, Aston Villa are ready to fight as hard as they can to prevent Vlaar departing.

It is suggested that Villa have attempted to begin talks over a new deal with Vlaar, but the 29-year-old has asked for time to consider his options.

Pedullà also hints that Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is considering a move for Vlaar, who he knows well from his time in charge of the Netherlands.

The next week could be crucial in deciding whether Vlaar is willing to commit his long-term future to Aston Villa or whether Lazio or Roma can lure him.
