Southampton defender Jose Fonte has been named as the new captain, after signing a new three-year deal.

Ronald Koeman confirmed that the former Crystal Palace man would captain the Saints on the field this season, after Fonte committed his future to Southampton.

Speaking on Friday afternoon, Koeman told reporters: "Jose is the captain for this season on the field – we have another captain in Kelvin Davis, who is the captain of the club, but José is the captain on the pitch.

"I am very pleased about his new contract, which keeps our ambition and philosophy of the club. I am happy about that."

Fonte's future had been under the microscope in the media, following a string of high-profile departures from St. Mary's Stadium.

Despite offers from Cardiff City and Hull City, the Portuguese defender admitted that he had no desire to leave Southampton and felt "at home" on the south coast.

“I am very excited to be signing this new contract for another three years. This is where I feel at home and I’ve been very successful at this club in the last five years, so it was an easy decision," Fonte stated.

"What made we sign was first that we signed a very good manager and second that the fans have been very good with me. They love me and I have a very good relationship with them.

"Thirdly, I believe that we have enough quality in the team, and that with as few additions we will have a very good season and will try to do the same as last year or even better if we can."

Despite a 'summer of pain', a term used by Saints chairman Ralph Krueger to describe this summer's upheaval, Fonte remains hopeful that alongside his new team-mates, he will be able to emulate the success of last season.

"I can promise that everyone in the squad will be working 100 per cent to be better than last year," he said.
