Manchester United legend backs Chelsea to win Premier League

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville believes that Jose Mourinho's new-look Chelsea will win the Premier League this season.

The Portuguese coach has addressed his side's weaknesses this summer with the signings of Diego Costa, Filipe Luis, Didier Drogba and Cesc Fabgreas.

The Blues' strike-force of Demba Ba, Samuel Eto'o and Fernando Torres managed a meagre goal return of 19 between them last term, and Mourinho made no secret of his continued exasperation with the efforts of his forwards.

Of the trio only Torres remains, and the Spaniard is likely to play third fiddle behind Costa and Drogba.

Costa, a £32 million arrival from Atletico Madrid, is expected to lead the line, while Blues legend Drogba returns on a one-year deal. Mourinho also splurged £30m on ex-Arsenal captain Fabregas from Barcelona.

Ashley Cole has left on a free transfer to Roma, but the Blues have recruited Atletico's Luis, who established himself as a key member of the Los Rojiblancos squad that came within a whisker of a La Liga and Champions League double.

Another big name of the La Liga-winning Atleti squad, Thibaut Courtois, has returned to the club to give Petr Cech some serious competition in goal, while Kurt Zouma has been recalled from Saint-Etienne to cover for the loss of David Luiz, who joined Paris Saint-Germain for an eye-watering £50m.

And Neville, who played for United for 19 years from 1992-2011, has backed the Stamford Bridge side for the title this coming campaign.

He told The Telegraph: “If you look at Courtois, Cech, Ivanovic, Terry, Cahill, Matic, Willian, Hazard, Costa, Fabregas, they’re going to take some stopping. They’re my tips for the league.

“Last year Mourinho was trying to pinch a league and probably should have done better with the points they dropped. The additions of Costa and Drogba as an understudy who might play 15 matches are important.

"They really struggled up front last season. Torres, Eto’o and Ba fell short of what’s required at the highest level and it cost them.

"The rest of the team didn’t look too bad. With the addition of another goalscoring midfielder in Fabregas and a powerhouse up front, Costa, with Drogba, it makes them very difficult to stop.”

Chelsea begin their new season with a game against newly-promoted Burnley on Monday August 18.
