On this day: Tottenham complete €11m signing; Chelsea youngster signs 5-year deal

Mourinho Press Conference Still

On the 9th August 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea.

Let's cast our eyes back to this exact day, the 9th August 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 9th August 2013…

Eti-In

Tottenham Hotspur completed the signature of Etienne Capoue a year ago today. The French international turned down the advances of fellow Premier League side Cardiff City to agree an €11 million deal to arrive at White Hart Lane.

The combative midfielder was the latest big money signing for the club following on from the likes of Paulinho, Nacer Chadli and Roberto Soldado.

But his first campaign at the club was not ideal. He suffered a serious knee injury early in his Spurs career and spent much of the term on the side-lines. When he didn't he struggled for regular first-team football and his performances were sub-par when present. He will be hoping for a better sophomore year with Tottenham.

Backing for Ake

Chelsea were committing one of their star youngsters to a long term contract with the club, as they managed to convince Nathan Ake to sign a five-year extension at the club.

The Dutch teenager, who had been at the club since arriving from Feyenoord in 2011, said of his new deal:

"I'm very happy that Chelsea is rewarding me with a new contract for my effort and development the last years."

Strangely for a Chelsea youngster Ake has not been loaned out, and in fact has played a big role in pre-season.

Could 2014-15 be his breakout season?

Can Capoue still be a hit at Spurs?
